Southport Sharks Hall of Fame

The Southport Sharks Hall of Fame celebrates the extraordinary individuals who have made a lasting impact on our club, both on and off the field. Induction into this prestigious group is the highest honour we can bestow, recognising those who have demonstrated excellence, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the success and legacy of the Sharks.

To be considered for induction, individuals must have made a significant contribution to the club, whether through exceptional playing achievements, coaching success, or dedicated service that has helped shape Southport into the powerhouse it is today. Their influence must extend beyond statistics, embodying the values and spirit of the Sharks.

Each inductee has left an indelible mark on our history, and it is with great pride that we honour their dedication, achievements, and the legacy they leave behind for future generations.

Peter
Riewoldt

Peter Riewoldt

Peter was a very competitive Ruck and Key Forward from Tasmania and played 75 games for Southport between 1987-1991. He was a regular State Representative player, playing five games for Queensland and played a key role in three Premierships in 1987,1989 and 1990.

Paul
Siede

Paul Siede

Originally from Broken Hill, Siede was a Ruckman at Southport Sharks from 1989-1994. He played 90 senior games including the 1990 and 1992 Premierships and was awarded the Joe Grant Medal for Best on the Ground in the 1992 Grand Final.

Ashkar

David Ashkar

Played 89 senior games and 105 for the club in total (including 1989 and 1990 premierships). Was a very quick Wingman/Forward between 1988 and 1994. A Queensland Rep player. Went on to establish a coaching career at Burleigh and Labrador. He worked as the assistant coach at Southport and the Head coach of the State Under 18 team. Ashkar is now the Assistant Football Manager for the club.

David Bain

Played between 1995 - 2000 (110 games). Best & Fairest 1995. Premiership Captain 4 times. Grogan Medalist 2 times. Outstanding playing career with Sharks after playing for Brisbane & Fitzroy in the AFL as well as a Sandover medalist in the WAFL. Inaugural Captain and team member of 25 years, 1983-2008.

Sean Ballans

Mid fielder. Came to Southport from Lara and was a Member of 1997, 1998, 1999 Premiership teams. Represented Queensland and won Joe Grant Medal 1999 (Best on Ground Grand Final). Club Best and Fairest in 1998 and 1999. Rarely beaten, winning the hard ball time and time again. Inaugural team member of 25 years, 1983-2008.

Burns

Davey Burns

Played between 1961 - 1981. A pioneer player of SAFC. Best & Fairest 1964, 1968 and 1969. Premiership Captain & Coach. Games record holder 230+ games. Player Life Member 150 games/10 years service.

Darren
Carlson

Darren Carlson

Played 64 games for Southport as Wingman/Onballer including the premierships of 1985, 1987 and 1989. The first Gold Coast player to be elevated to the Brisbane Bears list out of the QAFL competition. Played 25 AFL games and went on to a distinguished SANFL career with West Adelaide before finishing his football at Southport. He represented Queensland on 10 occasions and is still actively involved in AFLQ state programs.

Ken Clark

Played between 1977 - 1984 (125 games). Premiership Player 1977, 1979 and 1980. Prodigious left footer who could kick goals from anywhere. Dangerous half forward flanker who played the small Owen park oval well. Represented Gold Coast when they versed Papau New Guinea more than once.

Played 1983 - 1994 (188 games). Premiership player 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990 & 1992. Coached 3 Premierships 1998, 1999 (undefeated) and 2000. Best & Fairest 1985 and 1990. League (Grogan) Medallist 1990 and 1993. Regular State Representative & State Captain. Coached QLD State open side 2007, 8, 9, 10, 11. Player Life Member 150 games / 10 year’s service. Inaugural All- Star team member of 25 years, 1983-2008.

Played between 1983 - 1993 (190 games). Best & Fairest 1988, 89. Premiership Captain 1990. Premiership Player 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1992. State Representative 12 times. Senior Premiership Coach 2006 and 2008. Aggressive half back flanker who was a super skilful kick both sides of his body. Player Life Member 150 games/10 years service. Inaugural All- Star team member of 25 years, 1983-2008.

Coach 1982 - 1988, 2004 - 2005. 8 Grand Finals with 4 Flags (1983, 1985, 1987 & 2005). Coached the victorious QLD State Sides 1983, 1984. Also coached QLD State of Origin Side in 1991 to victory against Victoria B state side. Life member. Named Inaugural All-Star Coach of Sharks first 25 years 1983-2008.

Milton Davis

Played between 1976 - 1993 (69 senior & 120 Reserves games). Played over 200 club games. Consummate clubman who played his role week in week out. Held in high regard by committee, coaches & playing group for his courage, toughness and aggression at the ball.

Played between 1983 - 1989 (88 games). Best & Fairest 1983 and 1984. Premiership Player 1983, 1985 and 1989. Regular State Representative. Hailed from Mordiallic in the VFL via Coolangatta. Superb tap ruckman who was a super mark and kick. Won 1983 Grogan medal. Inaugural all-star team member of 25 years, 1983-2008.

Utility player used in defence and attacking key positions. Played 108 games. Premierships in 1989, 1990 and 1992. Best & Fairest 1993. State Representative. Rarely beaten in one on one contests. "Mr Fix It" with super skills who played tall as well as good below his knees. Great kick for goal and super team player. Inaugural Team Member of 25 years, 1983-2008.

Played between 1972 - 1982 (93S & 97R) Creative running backman who started his senior career as a forward Premiership Player 1975, 1976, 1979 and 1980 Super clubman who always put the team first. Never say die attitude who inspired others

Robbie Jones

Southport Sharks Junior. A rover, played 88 games and who played in Premierships in 1989, 1990 and 1992. Super skillful left foot rover who would deliver ball into forward line with precision. Represented QLD at State level.

Kennedy

Matthew Kennedy

Premiership player 1989. 180 AFL games for Bears/Lions. Local Surfers Paradise Junior. Power Backman who got the big jobs at AFL level. Ironically played forward in 1989 premiership only to go on to be a power backman at AFL level. A super trainer who left no stone unturned. A role model for juniors in years to come.

Steven Lawrence

Played for Southport Sharks Juniors and Seniors and went on to play 126 games for Bears/Lions and St Kilda. Like his father Barry who played for St Kilda a super determined never say die player who won respect through his unwavering commitment to the team and single minded work ethic. Never took a backward step.

Scott Lawton

Defender from Palm Beach. Bears listed player and QLD Representative player. Played in premierships in 1989, 1990, 1997 and 2000. Became Captain Coach. Coached a Premiership at Ganmain and has continued his career as Coach of Palm Beach and Coolangatta. Running backman who never was beaten. Inaugural team member of 25 years, 1983-2008.

Phil McGarry

Came to Southport after playing at Palm Beach and Morningside. As a tall Defender or tall Forward he was a tough, uncompromising opponent. He was a regular Queensland Rep choice and played 15 state games. A dual premiership player in 1987 and 1990. After knee injuries forced him into retirement he continued his football involvement as a sports trainer.

Played between 1980 - 1991 (140 games). Best & Fairest 1980, 1981 and 1982. Premiership Player 1980, 1983, 1985 and 1987. Premiership Coach 1989 and 1990. Senior Premiership Captain. 1983 first year in QAFL. Inspirational leader of the club through the 80’s and then went on to successfully coach the club. Midfield Dynamo.

Played between 1975 - 1981 (120 games). Best & Fairest 1979. Had a distinguished career at Geelong in the then VFL. A super talented big man who was a magnificent mark. A man mountain on the ground rarely outmarked. 1980 player and premiership coach.

Ray Sarcevic

Former Geelong Under 19 captain who made a big impact during his career at Southport. A tough, versatile player who could play on ball or key position. He played 58 games between 1987-1989 including the 1987 and 1989 premierships. He represented Queensland on two occasions. He was a Joe Grant medalist in the 1989 grand final.

Played between 1978 - 1986 (143 games). Premiership Player 1979, 1980 and 1983. Regular State Representative. Arguably one of the fittest guys every season who got the big jobs week in week out. Played above his size a great mark and team man. Inaugural team member of 25 years, 1983-2008.

Brett Thompson

Played between 1984 - 1988 (68 games). Premiership Player 1985 and 1987. Coached over 200 games with 6 Flags. Full forward who was a great lead mark and kick for goal. Kicked 6 straight in the 1985 premiership which the club won by less than a goal. Life member Junior Sharks for his time contributed to junior development.

225 games Southport Magpies and Sharks inclusive. Ten time premiership player at Sharks/Magpies, Joe Grant Medalist, Club Captain, Club Best & Fairest, Grogan Medalist, State Game record holder of 26 games. Inaugural team member of 25 Years of 25 Greats 1983 - 2008. Player Life Member 150 games/10 years service and Club Life Member.

Played between 1975 - 1981 (98 games). Captain Coach 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1978. Coach 1981. Inspirational leader who was a tough as teak centreman. Premiership playing Coach 1975, 1976 and 1977. Originally hailed from East Launceston, Tasmania.
