Werribee v Southport VFL Round 19 Match Report

Southport defeat the top of the table Werribee Tigers by six points at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday Afternoon.

Southport defeat the top of the table Werribee Tigers by six points at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday Afternoon.

The Sharks led by two points at quarter time and six points at half time but the scores were level at three quarter time.

Werribee kicked the first goal of the last quarter before the Sharks kicked three goals in a row to lead by 13 points.

The Tigers responded shortly after with two goals in a row to only trail by a point.

With the game on a knife’s edge, Southport forward Wylie Buzza marked the ball on the fifty-metre arc.

He then went back and slotted it which ended up being the sealer in the Sharks 8.13 (61) to 8.7 (55) victory.

Jacob Heron, Jacob Dawson, Brayden Crossley and Boyd Woodcock were terrific in the midfield for the Sharks whilst Jesse Joyce and Matt McGuinness were solid down back.

Southport Coach Steve Daniel said, “It was great to come down to Werribee and knock off the ladder leaders.”

“We knew it was going to be a challenge, but as a group, we believed that if we came in with the right mindset and brought the right pressure and intensity, we could get the four points.”

“In the context of our season, it was really important to win today as we don’t just want to make up the numbers in this year’s finals series.”

“We know that we still have a lot of work to do, but today helps remind us to keep working hard and who knows how far we can go.”

This week, Southport has a bye. The following week Southport play North Melbourne on 17 August at Fankhauser Reserve in the final round of the home and away season.
