Prodigal son Cotter makes a triumphant return to Shark Park

Prodigal son Cotter makes a triumphant return to Shark Park

WHEN Southport thought they had to look for another coach after Danny Brennan’s success in 1997, the logical replacement was at the club’s doorstep.

Jason Cotter had always been earmarked for a return to the Sharks after building an impressive coaching record in his three seasons away in the Gold Coast AFL competition.

The circumstances behind Cotter’s return could be seen as rather strange, given Brennan‘s 1997 side won the grand final by 94 points, but there were indications he was going to retire on a high note, so the Sharks chased Cotter.

Brennan, in fact, was to be a late applicant for the coaching job, but the Sharks had already done a ‘deal’ with Cotter, who had a tremendous record away from the Sharks.

In 1995 he took Palm Beach-Currumbin to the GCAFL flag, ending a 10-year drought. Cotter then switched to Broadbeach, where he won another GCAFL flag and also broke a 10-year drought for the Cats.

In 1997 Cotter steered Broadbeach to the finals in the club’s first year at QSFL level.

Chris Smith proved a great pick-up at centre half-back and was runner-up in the B@F. And former VFL utility Julian Shanks was also a top recruit in the midfield.

And Cotter was not the only one to return from Broadbeach. So did forward Rod Mackay, seemingly over his 1997 bust-up with the Sharks.

This was the season in which Clint Watts made people take notice and he finished the year off in a blaze of glory by being named Joe Grant Medallist for best-on-ground in the grand final triumph against Morningside.

The grand final side was:
Backs: Ian Dargie, Dean Bowtell, Shaun Stephens.
Half-backs: Clint Watts, Chris Smith, Shauin Coughlan.
Centres: Richard Maloney, Shaun Ballans, Adam McKenzie.
Half-forwards: Craig Mansbridge, Justin Hodgkinson, David Bain.
Forwards: Gary Hayes-Dewar, Rod Mackay, Nick Mansbridge.

Interchange: Craig Wilson, Rob Panozzo, Mark Smith, Nathan Balshaw.

Season 2018 has been arguably the most successful ever for Southport Sharks.

Back to back NEAFL Grand Finals for Southport Sharks as the have another great season.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the club in many ways including the cancellation of the NEAFL season. The club was able to field a senior women’s team for the first time ever, resulting in a fantastic Premiership win!

The men were elevated into a revamped Eastern Seaboard competition, the VFL, and the senior women remained in the QFAW Division 1 competition – becoming back-to-back premiers!

All three teams made the Grand Final and the QAFLW Reserves won the premiership in their first year in the competition.

A successful year for our players, with eight of our QAFLW team getting drafted into the AFLW
