Southport v Williamstown Round 18 Match Recap

Southport turned the tables on Williamstown in a 22-point win at Fankhauser Reserve, with debut goals from Justin Krok and Hewago Oea’s four-goal haul leading the charge.

Southport defeated Williamstown by 22 points at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday Afternoon.

Justin Krok celebrates his first VFL goal with teammate Brock Aston.

The Sharks 17.10 (112) to 14.6 (90) victory, reversed the result of their three point loss to the Seagulls in Round 6 earlier this year.

Williamstown started well with VFL leading Goalkicker Brodie McLaughlin kicking two goals in the first five minutes of the game.

The Seagulls scored another goal, before the Sharks finally kicked their first major through an impressive Zac Foot effort just before quarter time.

Southport debutant Justin Krok scored the first goal of the second quarter to cut the margin to five points.

McLaughlin then steadied for the visitors with his third goal before the Sharks kicked four goals in a row to close out the first half.

Southport continued the momentum in the third term kicking six goals to four, led by Hewago Oea in his club debut kicking three in the quarter.

Oea then kicked his fourth early in the last term to extend the margin to 41 points.

McLaughlin responded shortly after with his fifth goal of the day to ignite a fightback but unlike Round 6 it was too little too late from the Seagulls.

Southport have now won their last three games and sit third on the ladder with three rounds left in the home and away season.

Zac Foot was the Sharks’ best player with 25 disposals, eight marks and three goals.

After the game, Southport Coach Matthew Primus said, “I was really impressed with the boys’ performance.”

“Williamstown came out pretty hot and we were a bit off defensively in the first term.”

“After quarter time though, I thought we defended well and were able to get the ball to space, especially in the second and third quarters.”

“Then, when we were challenged in the final quarter, we were able to stand firm and have a good victory.”

Next week, Southport host Box Hill on Saturday 2 August at Fankhauser Reserve at 11:35am.
