The Southport Sharks have been actively working alongside Griffith University to learn, grow and understand more about innovation through sports technology.
Through this partnership, Griffith University provides sports technology, science, performance analysis and scientific feedback that can be accessed by Sharks athletes and staff.
Conversely, Southport offers an environment where Griffith students can apply learning and conduct real world research in a high-performance sport setting.
Both working as key components within the Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct (GCHKP) – a hub for technology health, science, education and innovation on the Gold Coast – Griffith University and the Southport Sharks maintain a strategic partnership focused on sports science, technology, research, and student development.
On Wednesday night, a number of Griffith students lead by Luka Starick provided testing to Southport’s QAFLW squad. Luka – who is studying clinical exercise physiology said, “My time at Griffith has made me immensely aware of what research can do for elite athletes, in benefit of prolonging their career.”
“I love being able to share my experiences and abilities with a club that has such a positive environment and incredible talent. As a student, it’s been inspirational to be able to have hands on experience.”
With the Health & Knowledge Precinct being such an integral part of both parties’ structures, and a long-standing history of affiliation, the ongoing relationship is highly valued at Southport.
Sharks’ High Performance Manager Matthew Palmer said, “By sharing resources and expertise, we’re strengthening research and data capabilities. It creates meaningful student opportunities and gives our players the chance to grow and perform in a safe, high-performance environment.”
“We are a test bed, they use our facilities, athletes’ people and processes – and a lot of our research comes from Griffith.”
“Our relationship with Griffith University as a fellow Precinct Partner is critical to our role within the Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct, and integral to what we intend to achieve with our Masterplan.”
