Southport has responded emphatically to last week’s disappointing result, producing a dominant display to defeat Aspley in Round 6 QAFLW action.
The Sharks controlled the contest from the outset to record a commanding 10.24 (84) to 1.2 (8) victory, with only inaccurate kicking preventing an even larger margin.
Southport asserted itself early, generating repeat forward entries and locking the ball inside its attacking half throughout the opening term. While the Sharks were unable to fully capitalise on the scoreboard, their pressure and territory dominance laid the foundation for the afternoon.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Southport continuing to dictate play and deny Aspley scoring opportunities. The Sharks’ defensive structure held firm, restricting the hosts to scoreless football across the opening half while gradually extending the margin.
After the main break, Southport elevated its intensity again, moving the ball with greater fluency and finally converting more consistently in front of goal. The Sharks added two goals in the third quarter before putting the game beyond doubt with another strong final term.
Despite finishing with 24 behinds, Southport’s control around the contest and ability to generate sustained attacking pressure ensured the result was never in doubt, capping off an impressive response after last week’s setback.
Stephanie O’Brien (31 disposals, 16 contested possessions) led the way with another influential performance, while Olivia Meagher (29 disposals) and Tenielle Langdale (16 hitouts) were important contributors across the ground. Tayla Christensen continued her strong season with three goals, while Caitlin Miller (14 disposals, one goal) and Maddy Baldwin (three goals) also played key roles in the victory.
The Sharks now turn their attention to Saturday 30 May as they look to build further momentum in the QAFLW competition after this week’s bye.
