SENIORS

Southport has responded emphatically to last week’s disappointing result, producing a dominant display to defeat Aspley in Round 6 QAFLW action.

The Sharks controlled the contest from the outset to record a commanding 10.24 (84) to 1.2 (8) victory, with only inaccurate kicking preventing an even larger margin.

Southport asserted itself early, generating repeat forward entries and locking the ball inside its attacking half throughout the opening term. While the Sharks were unable to fully capitalise on the scoreboard, their pressure and territory dominance laid the foundation for the afternoon.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern, with Southport continuing to dictate play and deny Aspley scoring opportunities. The Sharks’ defensive structure held firm, restricting the hosts to scoreless football across the opening half while gradually extending the margin.

After the main break, Southport elevated its intensity again, moving the ball with greater fluency and finally converting more consistently in front of goal. The Sharks added two goals in the third quarter before putting the game beyond doubt with another strong final term.

Despite finishing with 24 behinds, Southport’s control around the contest and ability to generate sustained attacking pressure ensured the result was never in doubt, capping off an impressive response after last week’s setback.

Stephanie O’Brien (31 disposals, 16 contested possessions) led the way with another influential performance, while Olivia Meagher (29 disposals) and Tenielle Langdale (16 hitouts) were important contributors across the ground. Tayla Christensen continued her strong season with three goals, while Caitlin Miller (14 disposals, one goal) and Maddy Baldwin (three goals) also played key roles in the victory.

The Sharks now turn their attention to Saturday 30 May as they look to build further momentum in the QAFLW competition after this week’s bye.

RESERVES

Southport has continued its unbeaten start to the QAFLW Reserves season, delivering another polished performance with a comprehensive victory over Aspley.

The Sharks were in control throughout the afternoon, recording a dominant 14.9 (93) to 0.0 (0) win while maintaining their impressive momentum in 2026.

Southport wasted little time establishing ascendancy, moving the ball cleanly and applying strong pressure to open up a 27-point advantage at quarter time. The Sharks’ defensive structure was equally effective, preventing Aspley from generating any meaningful scoring opportunities.

The visitors continued to build throughout the second term, controlling possession and linking up effectively through the middle of the ground. Their efficiency going inside 50 allowed the margin to grow beyond eight goals by the main break.

After half time, Southport elevated the tempo again, producing its most damaging quarter of the afternoon with five goals in a dominant third-term display. The Sharks’ ability to win territory and maintain relentless forward pressure ensured the game remained firmly on their terms.

Southport closed out the contest with another steady final quarter, extending the margin further to cap off a complete four-quarter performance and preserve its undefeated record.

Abbie Pluples starred in front of goal with four majors, while Maddie Gault added three in a strong attacking display. Ruby Mitchell and Carlee Smith were influential across the ground, with Ebony Milne, Serina Balanda and Jesica Pang also among the Sharks’ standout contributors.

The Sharks now turn their attention to Saturday 30 May as they seek to remain undefeated QAFLW competition after this week’s bye.
