ALANA GEE AND FLEUR DAVIES GET DRAFTED

The Southport Sharks congratulate Alana Gee and Fleur Davies for being drafted on Wednesday Night at the AFLW Draft at Marvel Stadium.

Southport Football General Manager Jarrod Field said, “It was great to see both girls get drafted.”

Alana Gee hails from Mackay and joined the Sharks this year as part of her participation in the Suns’ Academy.

Field said, “She is a great athlete and understands the game well. You can tell she will be a good player at AFLW level.”

Fleur Davies is a Southport Shark junior and Senior Premiership Player in 2021.

Fleur is the second player in the Davies family to get drafted with her older sister Gisele being drafted to the Gold Coast Suns last year.

“It’s fantastic to see Sharks juniors like Fleur and Giselle get drafted. It’s a huge credit to the strength of our junior club,” Field said.

“Now that we have a state league team, our pathway from Auskick to AFLW is excellent. So, hopefully, we can see many more Sharks girls become AFLW players.”

Field does not take lightly the responsibility that the QAFLW program at Southport has in the pathway.

He said, “Obviously, we want our teams to push to make finals yearly. We also want to help our players get better and play the highest level they can.”

“We do that by creating the best possible environment we can with quality coaches”.

“It can be challenging for the girls to balance representative and club football commitments. We know that representative football takes priority, and we support them in that.”

“We don’t push them too hard and try to reduce their load when they are training with us”.

Fleur and Alana will start training for their new clubs immediately, and hopefully, they are both playing in Round 1, which begins on 25 August.
