The Southport Sharks travelled to South Brisbane to take on Coorparoo in Round 6 of the QAFLW at Giffin Park on Saturday Afternoon, as part of Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.

SENIORS

Southport defeated Coorparoo by 59 points winning 12.7 (79) to 3.2 (20).

The Sharks got off to a great start, with Tayla Gregory kicking the first two goals in the first five minutes of the game.

Coorparoo kicked two of the next four goals to stay in the contest at half time, before the Sharks ran away with it in the second half.

Southport kicked three goals to zero in the third term and five goals to one in the final quarter.

Maddy Baldwin led the Sharks with four goals, three of which she kicked in the last quarter.

Steph O’Brien (27 disposals, six clearances and two goals), Avalon Pearce (35 hitouts and two contested marks), and Kierra Zerafa (24 disposals, five clearances and a goal) were also amongst the Sharks’ best.

Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “I’m so proud of the girls, it was a tough assignment to beat Coorparoo on the home deck, and we did it.”

“We have learnt a lot about ourselves in the first six weeks of the season, but we have reached the second competition bye with four wins and two losses, which I think is a good result.”

This week, is a QAFLW competition bye. Southport’s next game is against Yeronga at 2pm at Leyshon Park.

RESERVES

Southport defeated Coorparoo by 52 points, winning 11.6 (72) to 3.2 (20).

The first quarter was even with both teams kicking two goals each.

Leading by two points at quarter time, the Sharks got to work kicking four goals to one in the second quarter.

The Sharks kept their foot on the peddle in the third term kicking another three goals to zero to lead by 39 points at three quarter time.

Coorparoo were kept goalless in the last quarter as well whilst the Sharks kicked another two goals to win their fourth game in a row.

Jess Maher and Maddy Gault continued their good form, while Neesa Doyle starred in front of goal, scoring three majors.

The Sharks remain second on the QAFLW Reserves Ladder with a win-loss record of 5-1. The only thing separating them from Bond University, who are on top, is percentage.

Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “We are in some good form which is really pleasing. I think we are connecting well as a team, and everyone is playing their role.”

This week, is a QAFLW competition bye. Southport’s next game is against Yeronga at 12pm at Leyshon Park.
