DAN CHARLESWORTH REACHES 50 SOUTHPORT GAMES

The Southport Sharks would like to congratulate Daniel Charlesworth for reaching his 50th game for the club this weekend against Essendon.

The Southport Sharks would like to congratulate Daniel Charlesworth for reaching his 50th game for the club this weekend against Essendon.

The defender has had quite a journey to get to 50 Southport games.

Charlesworth made his debut at the Sharks in 2016 when he was part of the SUNS Academy.

Originally from Cairns, he moved to the Gold Coast along with current Geelong player Jack Bowes due their involvement at the SUNS Academy.

Unfortuanely, unlike Bowes, Charlesworth, unfortunately, didn’t get drafted in 2016.

He remained part of the SUNS Academy and played for both the SUNS and Sharks in the NEAFL in 2017.

In 2018, he joined the Sharks full time and played every game until doing his ACL against Aspley in Round 18 and missed out on playing in the 2018 NEAFL Premiership.

Charlesworth missed all of 2019 due to his ACL injury. In 2020 the Sharks did not play any games due to covid so he played eight games for his QAFL club Surfers Paradise instead.

In 2021, he returned to Southport in another covid affected year, and began his VFL Career.

Then in 2022, he relished the opportunity of playing forward late in the year due to an injury to Fraser Thurlow and played a huge role in the Sharks finals campaign as a forward/ruckman.

This year he has gone back to being a key defender and has consistently been one of the Sharks’ best players.

Southport Coach Steve Daniel said, “Dan has been a terrific servant for our football club for a long period of time now, and we congratulate him on his 50 games.”

“It’s a shame that he missed out on playing in our 2018 NEAFL Premiership due to his ACL injury, but he played a significant role in helping us get there.”

“His game has gone to a whole new level this year, and it has been great to see him consistently contribute this season.”

The Sharks’ game against Essendon will take place at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday, the 5th of August, at 11:35 am.
