QAFLW ROUND 6 MATCH REPORTS – COORPAROO V SOUTHPORT

On Saturday, the Southport Sharks QAFLW teams travelled to Brisbane to take on Coorparoo at Giffin Park, on Turrbal Country. 

On the weekend, the AFL community celebrated Sir Doug Nicholls Round. 

Sir Doug Nicholls Round highlights the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander contributions to the game. 

On Saturday, the Southport Sharks QAFLW teams travelled to Brisbane to take on Coorparoo at Giffin Park, on Turrbal Country. 

The girls wore special warm up tops and socks by Gangurru Apparel to celebrate the round.  

Seniors 

The Southport Sharks QAFLW Senior team defeated Coorparoo by 30 points on Saturday Night. 

The Seniors’ 5.9 (39) to 1.3 (9) win means they head into their first bye of the season undefeated.  

Southport got off to a great start leading by 28 points at halftime, before Coorparoo were able to make it a more even second half. 

Georgia Breward and Steph O’Brien were machines in the midfield, as per usual.  

Darcie Davies had a new role on the weekend down back and did a really good job, taking a lot of intercept marks. 

Tayla Gregory continues to have a breakout year, and her ability to take contested marks on the weekend was outstanding.  

After the game, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “It was a tough and physical game, so I was really pleased with how we were able to win the ball at the contest and get territory.” 

“We do need to work on our efficiency Inside 50 but other than that we ticked a lot of boxes on Saturday”. 

“We have had a great start to the season, and we will use the bye as an opportunity to rest and recover and get ready for the second half of the season.” 

After the bye, the Sharks’ QAFLW Seniors play the University of Queensland at Fankhauser Reserve at 3pm on Saturday, the 3rd of June.

Reserves 

The Southport Sharks QAFLW Reserves team are back on the winners’ list after defeating Coorparoo by 8 points on Saturday Afternoon.  

The Reserves 5.0 (30) to 3.4 (22) win means they head into their first bye second on the ladder.  

After the game, Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “It was a great, gutsy win against quality opposition.”  

The Sharks won the first quarter by four points and lost the second quarter by two points. In the second half, they won the third quarter by six points and tied the last quarter. 

Smith said, “Our third quarter was sensational. To kick two goals into the breeze was amazing and set the win up.” 

Victoria Winstanley was the standout for the Reserves in the midfield. 

Kaitlin Mercer was terrific up forward with three goals, and Abby Gain played an important defensive midfielder role. 

After the bye, the Sharks’ QAFLW Reserves play the University of Queensland at Fankhauser Reserve at 5pm on Saturday, the 3rd of June.
