SENIORS | Sharks claim top spot with statement win over Coorparoo
Southport has climbed to the summit of the QAFLW Seniors ladder, producing a composed performance to defeat previously top-placed Coorparoo at Fankhauser Reserve.
The Sharks secured a 7.6 (48) to 2.4 (16) victory, using a dominant second quarter to create separation before shutting the game down with a disciplined defensive display.
The contest began as an even battle, with Coorparoo striking first to register the opening goal of the afternoon. The Sharks responded almost immediately through Caitlin Miller (13 disposals, one goal), before both sides settled into a fierce arm wrestle around the contest.
Neither team was able to gain a significant advantage for the remainder of the quarter, with Southport taking a narrow two-point lead into the first break.
The match turned in the second quarter as the Sharks lifted their intensity and capitalised on their opportunities.
The smalls got busy, with Sienna Burnham (21 disposals, seven tackles, five clearances), Olivia Robinson (17 disposals, six tackles) and Holly Wall (15 disposals, four tackles) all hitting the scoreboard during a four-goal-to-one quarter that saw Southport establish a 21-point lead by half time.
Following the main break, the Sharks’ defensive unit took charge. Coorparoo struggled to generate any meaningful scoring opportunities as Southport controlled field position and denied the visitors any avenue back into the match. The sole goal of the third quarter came from Sharks debutant Jesica Pang (eight disposals, one goal).
The final quarter followed a similar pattern, with the Sharks remaining composed under pressure and closing out an impressive victory to move into top spot on the QAFLW Seniors ladder.
Melita Watts (19 disposals, seven tackles) was outstanding throughout the afternoon, while Scarlett Featherstone (11 disposals) continued her excellent season.
Ella Maurer (21 disposals, six tackles, five clearances) provided plenty of drive around the contest, with Giselle Davies (17 disposals, 16 hitouts, seven tackles), Abbie Pluples (17 disposals, four tackles) and Sienna Burnham also playing important roles in the win.
Southport will continue their QAFLW campaign Saturday 11 July against Maroochydore following a bye this weekend.

RESERVES | Sharks extend unbeaten streak with strong home victory
Southport has continued its flawless QAFLW Reserves campaign, overcoming second-placed Coorparoo to remain unbeaten and strengthen its grip on top spot.
The Sharks recorded a 6.7 (43) to 2.4 (16) victory, breaking the game apart after half time following a fiercely contested opening half.
The first quarter was a physical battle, with both sides matching each other around the contest and refusing to give an inch. Neive Ryan provided the early spark for Southport, kicking the opening goal for the Sharks as they edged to a seven-point advantage at the first break.
Coorparoo continued to apply pressure throughout the second term, ensuring the contest remained within reach. While Southport held a nine-point lead at the main break, the match was still evenly poised heading into the second half.
The third quarter proved decisive. The Sharks found another gear, surging forward with four unanswered goals to put the contest beyond doubt.
Mia Trinder was at the forefront of the charge, booting two majors for the term as Southport established complete control around the ground.
Although the Sharks were unable to add another goal in the final quarter, their defensive structure remained resolute. Coorparoo managed to add just one late major, with Southport comfortably closing out another impressive victory.
Neive Ryan was influential throughout the afternoon, while Mia Trinder capitalised on her opportunities in front of goal. Kaylea Kobzan again made her presence felt, with Peyton Mackie, Keely Whittaker and Sasha McCulloch all playing important roles in another polished team performance.
