Seniors | Sharks hold firm to claim gritty win over Broadbeach
Southport has continued its strong QAFLW Seniors campaign, withstanding a determined Broadbeach fightback to secure another important victory at Fankhauser Reserve.
The Sharks recorded a 4.5 (29) to 3.2 (20) win, doing the damage in a blistering opening quarter before defending resolutely for the remainder of the afternoon.
Southport wasted little time taking control, piling on four unanswered goals in the opening term to establish a 24-point lead at the first break. Tayla Christensen sparked the early charge with the opening goal of the match before adding another late in the quarter to cap off a dominant start.
Broadbeach responded after quarter time, lifting its intensity around the contest and preventing the Sharks from adding another major. Despite Southport creating opportunities, the visitors wrestled momentum back and gradually reduced the margin heading into the second half.
The contest remained a grind after the main break, with scoring becoming increasingly difficult. Southport’s defence stood up under pressure, absorbing repeat entries and refusing to allow Broadbeach to close the gap any further than nine points.
While the Sharks were unable to add to their first-quarter goal tally, the work completed early proved enough to secure another valuable four points.
Giselle Davies was influential throughout the contest, while Siobhan Ross again impressed with her work around the ball. Megan Hunt produced another composed defensive performance, with Ella Maurer and captain Rianna Schipp important contributors through the midfield. Lilly-ann Ryder also continued her strong season.
Tayla Christensen finished with two goals, while Grace Cooper and Neive Ryan each added a major.
The Seniors will conclude their home and away season taking on Moreton Bay at Red Rooster Park at 3:45pm next Saturday, August 8.
