Southport Sharks QAFLW Seniors Grand Final Match Report

The Southport Sharks have lost the QAFLW Senior Grand Final to UQ by seven points in extra time on Sunday afternoon.

The Southport Sharks have lost the QAFLW Senior Grand Final to UQ by seven points in extra time on Sunday afternoon.

The scores were locked at 24 each at full time. So, extra time was needed to decide the winner.

There were 2 x 3 minutes halves in extra time. UQ scored a goal within the first minute of extra time and a point in the second half of extra time to win the game 5.1.31 to 3.6.24

It was a devastating end for Southport to what was a sensational season for the team in their first year in the competition.

The Sharks had plenty of opportunities to score in the first quarter but could only manage behinds, which in hindsight proved costly.

UQ kicked a couple of goals, then finally Southport kicked a goal midway through the second quarter to cut the lead back to two points at half time.

Bree McFarlane kicked two goals in a row for the Sharks midway through the third quarter to hit the front and then extend the lead to 12 points.

The reigning premiers came back, though, kicking a goal late in the third term, and the only goal in the fourth quarter to send the game into extra time.

After the game, Ryan Davis said, “That was some contest. UQ was the team to beat all season, and they thoroughly deserved to win.”

“They took their opportunities on the day and unfortunately, we didn’t.”

“The result stings, but we were able to accomplish a lot in our first year in the competition. I am really proud of our group and everything we have done this year.”

“We will be back bigger and better next year, and hopefully, we can go one step further.”
