Seniors

The Southport Sharks Seniors have secured the QAFLW Seniors Minor Premiership with an 89 point win over the Coorparoo Kings.

Southport kept Coorparoo scoreless winning 14.5 (89) to 0.

The damage was done in the first half, with the Sharks kicking five goals in the first quarter and four goals in the second quarter.

In the second half the Sharks kept their foot on the pedal, adding another five goals.

Maggie O’Connell kicked four goals, Caitlin Wendland had another great game in the middle, and Kristi Harvey was the general down back.

After the game, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “It was a convincing, four quarter team performance, which is extremely pleasing so close to finals.”

“To win the minor premiership is a great achievement, but we want to go on to bigger and better things.”

“We have had a consistent season, but now it is about preparing well and having the right mindset for our finals campaign.”

“The possibility of playing a qualifying final in a couple of weeks against Bond University, who beat us last time we met, is looming large, but our attention is on this week’s game against Yeronga and putting in another performance as we did on the weekend.”

“We are in good form, so we need to stay in the present and keep focussing on what we can control.”

The Seniors’ game against Yeronga is on Saturday the 29th of July at 2pm at Fankhauser Reserve.

Reserves

Southport almost came from behind to defeat the QAFLW Reserves ladder leading Coorparoo but fell short by 2 points.

The Kings didn’t score in the last quarter, but they did enough to win 3.5 (23) to 3.3 (21).

It would’ve been a fairytale victory for much-loved player Meghan Sullivan who returned from a broken leg.

Sullivan did kick a crucial goal after a terrific holding the ball tackle in the third quarter to reduce the margin to 9 points seconds before the three quarter time siren though.

That moment gave the Sharks who had been trailing all game momentum going into the last quarter.

The Sharks were able to lock the ball inside their half of the ground for majority of the quarter, however, they were only able to kick one goal.

After the game Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “It was disappointing not to win.”

“I thought we played well and gave ourselves the best chance to win, but Coorparoo are on top of the ladder for a reason.”

This week the fourth placed Reserves play the fifth placed Yeronga on Saturday, the 29th of July at 2pm at Fankhauser Reserve.

If Southport win they will make finals and if they lose they will miss out, so it is an extremely important match.
