The Southport Sharks defeated the Frankston Dolphins by 48 points on Saturday Afternoon at Fankhauser Reserve in the second week of Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.

The Dolphins put up a great fight in the “Battle of the Fins,” but the Sharks proved too strong, winning 16.9 (108) to 8.9 (57).

Frankston got off to a fast start, kicking four of the first six goals of the game, to lead by 15 points late in the first quarter

Southport got to work in the second and third quarters kicking nine goals to Frankston’s two, to lead by 35 points at three quarter time.

To Frankston’s credit, they did everything they could in the last quarter to try and pull off a remarkable comeback win.

The Dolphins kicked the first two goals of the last quarter, cutting the margin to 23 points with plenty of time remaining in the final term.

However, they weren’t able to manage another goal for the game, whilst the Sharks went down the other end and kicked the last four goals of the game.

Jacob Heron (31 disposals, 14 inside 50s and ten clearances) and Hugh Dixon (five goals and ten marks) led the way for the Sharks in the victory.

After the game, Southport Coach Steve Daniel said, “I’m really proud of the group. Frankston challenged us on a number of occasions, but we stood firm, and in the end, it was a great team win.”

“We’ve now won five of our last six games, which really sets us up for the second half of the home and away season.”

This week, Southport have a bye. Their next game is against Williamstown at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday, 8th of June at 11:05 am.
