SENIORS

Southport defeated University of Queensland by 54 points, winning 9.8 (62) to 1.2 (8).

The Sharks got off to a great start with a goal in the first minute of the match. They kicked another two goals for the quarter to lead by 17 points at quarter time.

UQ kicked their only goal of the match in the first minute of the second quarter, and at that stage were well and truly in the match.

It didn’t take long for the Sharks to respond, though, with back-to-back goals, extending their lead to 25 points at halftime.

In the second half, Southport kept UQ scoreless and kicked two goals in both the third and fourth quarter to win their eighth game in a row.

Maddy Watt (34 disposals, seven clearances and 13 tackles), Kaylee Kimber (five intercept marks) and Steph O’Brien (26 disposals, seven inside 50s and a goal) led the way for the Sharks.

After the game, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “The scoreboard probably doesn’t reflect how tough the game was.”

“Credit to UQ they definitely challenged us, but I thought our girls handled it extremely well.”

“We were able to win a lot of the contested ball, get the ball inside 50 and capitalise, which was pleasing.”

This week, Southport play Maroochydore at South Pine Sports Complex Oval 1 at 4pm as part of Pride Round.
