VFL ROUND 3 MATCH REPORT – SOUTHPORT V WERRIBEE

It wasn’t the Southport Sharks’ day on Easter Saturday, losing to Werribee by 23 points in Round 3 of the VFL, at Fankhauser Reserve.

It wasn’t the Southport Sharks’ day on Easter Saturday, losing to Werribee by 23 points in Round 3 of the VFL, at Fankhauser Reserve.

The Sharks were still in it at three quarter time, but Werribee ran away with it kicking five goals to two in the last quarter to win 12.14 (86) to 8.15 (63).

Southport, who made the Grand Final last year, has not started the way they would’ve liked losing two of their first three games this season.

Daniel said, “I don’t think we need to look very deep into what has gone wrong in the last couple of weeks; we are not taking our opportunities.  In the last two weeks, we have had more Inside50s than our opposition and lost.

“The game was there to be won in the last quarter too. However, Werribee wanted it more than we did.”

The shining lights in the loss were Mackenzie Willis (31 disposals and nine marks), Jesse Joyce (29 disposals, five tackles and seven clearances) and Jacob Dawson (28 disposals, ten tackles and six clearances).

Attention now heads to Southport’s game against the Brisbane Lions, which will be played at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday at 12:05pm.

Daniel said, “We still have the belief that we are a good football team, we just need to do better in some key areas. It does not get any easier this week going up against the undefeated Lions. However, we will have a good week on the track and go up to Brisbane to try and win.
