Southport defeated Werribee by 13 points at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.

Southport defeated Werribee by 13 points at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.

The 12.8 (80) to 9.13 (67) victory continued the Sharks undefeated record at the Tigers’ home ground, making it three wins from three games.

Werribee started well kicking four goals to two in the opening term, but the Sharks hit back in the second quarter with five goals to two, taking a three-point lead into the main break.

Southport then extended their lead out to 33 points in the third quarter, before Werribee came back in the final term kicking three unanswered goals.

It wasn’t enough to overcome the Sharks though, as Southport recorded their 12th win of the season and lock in a position in the top 4.

Vice-Captain Zac Foot (two goals, 24 disposals, five marks, seven tackles and five clearances) and Co-Captain Jacob Dawson (29 disposals, six marks, six clearances and four tackles) led from the front for the Sharks.

Veterans Wylie Buzza (three contested marks and two goals) and Michael Manteit (five inside 50s and two score involvements) also played well.

Down back, Nick Williams (six intercepts, nine marks and five rebounds) and Max Spencer (17 disposals, eight marks) were solid.

After the game Southport Coach Matthew Primus said, “I thought we were efficient going inside 50
especially in the first half. We were also able to take away a lot of their uncontested marks which was important.”

“Werribee played quick in the last quarter to try and come from behind, but pleasingly we were able to stem their momentum and close out the game.”

“We had a lot of youth in our team and it was really good to see them stand up in key moments.”

“Today was an important step in the right direction of how we want to play and gives us confidence going into our last home and away game.”

Next week, Southport host North Melbourne at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday 16 August at 11:05am.
