STEVE DANIEL REACHES 100 GAMES AT SOUTHPORT

The Southport Sharks would like to congratulate VFL Senior Coach Steve Daniel who will be coaching his 100th game for the club this Saturday, against Williamstown.

The Southport Sharks would like to congratulate VFL Senior Coach Steve Daniel who will be coaching his 100th game for the club this Saturday, against Williamstown.

The year before Daniel joined Southport, the Sharks finished second last in the NEAFL, and in his first year at the club in 2018, the Sharks won the Premiership.

In 2019, Daniel took the Sharks to the NEAFL Grand Final against the Brisbane Lions which ended up being the last ever game of the NEAFL.

2020 was lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2021, the Sharks joined the VFL.

Daniel led the Sharks through their first season in the VFL, which was not completed due to the pandemic. Southport finished second on the ladder when the season was called off.

In 2022, Daniel coached the Sharks to the VFL Grand Final against the Casey Demons, in the club’s first full year in the competition.

Southport made the Grand Final that year off the back of emphatic finals wins against the Brisbane Lions and the Gold Coast SUNS.

2023 was not Southport’s best year, but after nine rounds of the 2024 season, he has the team sitting in fifth with six wins and three losses.

He was also named the 2018 NEAFL Coach of the Year and earlier this year, was an Assistant Coach of the VFL representative team.

Southport’s General Manager of Football Operations, Jarrod Field, said, “It’s a great achievement by Steve to reach 100 games as the NEAFL/VFL Senior Coach of the Southport Sharks.”

“There have been many highlights in his 99 games as senior coach, including the 2018 Premiership, our first game in the VFL which was a come from behind win against Carlton at Ikon Park and the finals wins in 2022.”

“Hopefully, this weekend is another highlight with a win over a quality Williamstown outfit in his 100th game.”
