Southport has retained the Mackenzie Cup after defeating Gold Coast by 55 points in front of a big crowd at Fankhauser Reserve on Easter Saturday.
The first three quarters were an arm wrestle, but the Sharks came home strong winning 16.15 (111) to 8.6 (56).
The Sharks, leading by 17 points at three quarter time, dominated in the last quarter kicking six goals to zero to close out their fourth win of the year and remain undefeated.
Jacob Dawson starred again for Southport with 34 disposals and five clearances.
Zach Molloy and Nick Williams were solid in defence whilst Jackson Edwards led the way in front of goals with three majors.
Zac Foot (25 disposals, 11 marks and a goal) was good in his 50th game for Southport, as was Keegan Gray (26 disposals and 12 marks) in his first game back from injury.
After the match Southport Coach Matt Primus said, “To retain the Mackenzie Cup was outstanding as Doc means an enormous amount to our football club.
“I was really proud of the boys efforts as the Suns have been in good form and it was a tough game.”
Next week Southport have a bye. The Sharks’ next game is against Williamstown on Saturday May 3 at DSV Stadium at 12:05pm.
