Sharks edged out in tight Grand Final rematch
Southport has fallen just short in a hard-fought contest against Morningside, with the visitors claiming a narrow one-point victory in a rematch of the 2025 Grand Final.
The Sharks were defeated 2.8 (20) to 3.3 (21) in a game defined by pressure, territory battles and missed opportunities, with the result hanging in the balance until the final siren.
It was an arm wrestle from the outset, although Southport generated the early chances. The Sharks controlled field position in the opening term and registered five scoring shots to none, but were unable to convert, taking a five-point lead into quarter time.
Morningside responded in the second quarter, capitalising on limited opportunities to hit the scoreboard and take a narrow lead into the main break, despite Southport continuing to find plenty of the football.
The contest remained tightly fought after half time, with both sides locked in a physical battle around the contest. Southport continued to apply pressure and create chances, but Morningside’s efficiency in front of goal proved the difference as the margin remained within a kick at the final change.
With the game on the line in the last quarter, both teams traded moments, but the Sharks were unable to find the decisive breakthrough, falling just short in a one-point result.
Youngsters Melita Watts and Scarlett Featherstone showed fight throughout the duration, while the experienced Grabby Biedenweg-Webster (15 disposals, seven tackles) showed her class and composure.
In defence, Kiara Hillier was reliable at ground level with 12 disposals and five tackles, while Lily McDonald impressed with her work in the air.
Up forward, opportunities were limited, with Biedenweg-Webster and Giselle Davies each finishing with a goal.
Southport will look to bounce back at University of Queensland this Saturday 25 April, taking on UQ.

Sharks continue dominant run with commanding reserves victory
Southport has continued its strong start to the 2026 QAFLW Reserves season, delivering another dominant performance to defeat Morningside.
The Sharks produced a comprehensive four-quarter display to secure a 12.7 (79) to 0.0 (0) victory, setting the tone early before maintaining control across the remainder of the contest.
It was an emphatic opening from Southport, piling on six goals in the first term while keeping Morningside scoreless. The Sharks’ pressure and ball movement proved too much to handle early, establishing a commanding 39-point lead at quarter time.
While not quite to the same extent, Southport continued its dominance across the following quarters, controlling possession and territory. The midfield group led the way, with strong clearance work and consistent supply inside 50 ensuring the margin continued to build steadily throughout the match.
Teneille Langdale was influential in the ruck, giving the Sharks first use at stoppages, while Ruby Mitchell, Holly Wall and Olivia Robinson were all outstanding through the midfield, driving the team’s control around the contest.
Up forward, the Sharks spread the load in a well-rounded attacking performance. Bonnie Brown, Kaylea Kobzan, Carlee Smith, Georgia Wakefield and Holly Wall each finished with two goals, while Ebony Milne and Keely Whittaker added one apiece.
Southport’s defensive pressure remained consistent throughout the contest, keeping Morningside scoreless for the entire game and capping off another emphatic team performance.
Southport will continue their stella start at University of Queensland this Saturday 25 April, taking on UQ.
