Southport Sharks celebrated their 2024 QAFLW Premierships with a flag unfurling at Fankhauser Reserve before recording impressive victories over the University of Queensland.

The Southport Sharks hosted the University of Queensland Red Lions at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.

Before the start of the Seniors match, the 2024 QAFLW Seniors and Reserves Premiership Flag Unfurling Ceremony took place.

Southport Sharks QAFLW Senior Coach Matthew Lappin said, “It was great for the group of players that participated in the premierships last season and get that acknowledgement in front of our home crowd.”

Seniors

Southport defeated the University of Queensland by 67 points, winning 10.13 (73) to 1.0 (6)

The Sharks put together another comprehensive performance, in windy and wet conditions. 

 

Steph O’Brien (23 dosposals, 8 clearances and two goals) and Maddy Watt (29 disposals, 8 clearances and 8 tackles) starred again for the Sharks.

After the game, Lappin said, “Another solid contest. The weather made for a more contested game.”

“We are a strong team in the contest, but we do want open the game up a bit more and that’s what we will continue to work on.”

Next week, Southport host Coorparoo for Sir Doug Nicholls Round at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday 17 May at 2pm.

Reserves

Southport are back on the winners’ list after defeating University of Queensland by 107 points, winning 15.17 (107) to (0).

The Sharks kicked five goals in the first quarter, three in the second, three in the third and four in the last.

A highlight of the win was Peyton Mackie’s first goal in her first game back after a year out of the game due to injury.

After the game, Southport Coach Shannon Tate said, “The girls played awesome today.”

“We won the territory, scored well, didn’t let them score and the girls supported each other really well.”

“This week we wanted to improve on some scenarios that we found ourselves in last week against Bond.”

We went to work on it at training, and I thought we executed it well, when we found ourselves in similar situations today.”

Next week, Southport host Cooparoo Sir Doug Nicholls Round at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday 17 May at 2pm.
