Southport v Frankston Round 9 Match Recap

VFL Round 9 saw Southport Sharks claiming second place on this seasons ladder, after beating Frankston by 40 points on home grounds.

Southport is second on the VFL ladder after defeating Frankston by 40 points at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.

In a high scoring affair, the Sharks won 22.10 (142) to 16.6 (102) in perfect conditions. 

The Sharks started the game well with seven of the first ten goals of the match.

Frankston responded though with six of the next ten to reduce the margin to 14 points just after half time.

Southport extended the margin back out to 38 points in the third quarter, before an even last term.

Boyd Woodcock (38 disposals, eight marks, 15 clearances and five goals) and Max Pescud (20 disposals, five marks and five goals) starred for the Sharks.

A highlight of the day was Max Pescud’s specky in the third quarter.

Jacob Dawson (38 disposals, eight marks and seven clearances) and Jesse Joyce (20 disposals, five rebounds and five intercepts) also played well.

After the game, Southport Coach Matt Primus said, “We had to tidy some things up from the first half and that was credit to Frankston. They made it a hard, honest midfield battle and pressured well all around the ground.”

“I was really pleased with the way we got on with the game in the second half though and came away with a strong win in the end.”

Next week, Southport travel to Melbourne to take on the Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval on Saturday 31 May at 11:35 AM.
