Southport suffered a heartbreaking six-point loss to the Swans in Round 13, despite leading by 44 points late in the third quarter. Sydney surged home in wet conditions to snatch victory at Fankhauser Reserve.

The Sydney Swans defeated the Southport Sharks by six points in wet conditions at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.

Sydney came from 44 points down late in the third quarter to win 12.20 (92) to 12.14 (86).
 
The Swans led by ten points at quarter time, but the Sharks dominated the second quarter to lead by 31 points at half time.
 
 
Southport kicked three of the first four goals of the third quarter, before the Swans kicked three goals in a row late in the third term to reduce the margin to 22 points at the last change.

In the last quarter Sydney kicked four answered goals to win their second match of the year.
 
After the game, Southport Coach Matt Primus said, “It was a tale of quarters.”
 
“We were ok in the first quarter, really good in the second quarter and solid in the first half of the third term.”
 
“Unfortunately, we lost momentum late in the third quarter and we weren’t able to get it back.”
 
“It was an opportunity missed, but credit to Sydney they played a great brand of football today.”
 
“We’ve just got to try and play our brand of football for longer, and that is our challenge going forward.”
