Sharks respond in style with commanding Anzac Day win

Southport has returned to the winner’s list in emphatic fashion, producing a dominant performance to defeat the University of Queensland in their Round 3 QAFLW clash.

The Sharks secured an 11.9 (75) to 1.3 (9) victory, taking control early and never relinquishing their grip on the contest in challenging conditions.

Looking to rebound from the previous week, Southport wasted no time asserting itself. Despite the slippery surface, the Sharks came out with intent, converting four first-quarter goals to open up a 28-point advantage and set the tone for the afternoon.

The visitors continued to dictate terms in the second quarter, controlling territory and winning the contested battle. While UQ managed to break through for its first score, Southport extended its lead to 40 points by the main break through sustained pressure and efficient ball use.

After half time, the Sharks maintained their composure in the conditions, winning the ball at the source and generating repeat forward entries. The margin grew steadily as Southport ensured the result was effectively beyond doubt heading into the final change.

With the game in hand, the Sharks closed out the contest strongly, conceding just nine points for the match in a disciplined defensive showing.

Steph O’Brien was outstanding against her former side, finishing with 27 disposals, eight clearances and two goals in a commanding midfield display. Ella Maurer was equally influential in the contest, recording 25 disposals, 21 contested possessions and seven clearances in a tireless performance.

Up forward, Tayla Christensen was a constant threat, producing a standout display in front of goal to finish with five majors, while Southport’s spread of contributors ensured a well-rounded attacking performance.

The Seniors will take on Wilston Grange this Saturday 2 May at 1:30pm.

Sharks maintain unbeaten run with strong showing on Anzac Day

Southport has continued its perfect start to the 2026 QAFLW Reserves season, securing a convincing win over the University of Queensland on Anzac Day.

The Sharks claimed a 7.13 (55) to 0.1 (1) victory, working through challenging conditions early before gaining control and finishing strongly.

The opening term was a grind, with both sides feeling their way into the contest in wet conditions. Southport created multiple opportunities with six scoring shots, but wayward finishing limited the early damage, as they took a 10-point lead into the first change.

From there, the Sharks began to find rhythm, improving their efficiency and linking up more effectively around the ground. Their ability to generate repeat entries started to show on the scoreboard, with the margin steadily increasing as the game progressed.

By the second half, Southport had established clear ascendancy, continuing to apply pressure and convert opportunities to pull away from their opponents. The visitors were restricted to a single behind for the entire match, highlighting a composed and organised defensive effort.

Olivia Robinson was influential across the day, contributing both through the midfield and on the scoreboard with two goals. Jesica Pang and Sage Crossley were also prominent, while Shelby Harrison and Tenielle Langdale played important roles in driving the team’s performance.

In attack, Bonnie Brown led the way with three majors, while Kaylea Kobzan and Langdale also kicked one a piece steady forward contribution.

The result sees Southport remain undefeated to start the season, with the side’s consistency across four quarters ensuring they move into top spot on the QAFLW ladder.

The Reserves will take on Wilston Grange this Saturday 2 May at 3:30pm.
