Southport has fallen to Coburg by 43 points, with inefficiency in front of goal proving costly in the 17.10 (112) to 9.15 (69) result.
COBURG took control of the contest early, piling on eight first-quarter goals to stun the Sharks and establish a commanding lead at the first change.
Southport responded with improved intensity in the second term, competing more strongly around the contest and generating repeat forward entries. However, the Lions continued to answer every challenge, maintaining control heading into half time.
Despite lifting their pressure through the middle stages of the game, the Sharks struggled to capitalise on their opportunities in front of goal, finishing with 15 behinds for the afternoon.
Coburg remained composed after the main break, continuing to control territory and punish turnovers to keep the home side at arm’s length throughout the second half.
Elijah Reardon battled hard across the contest, while Christian Webster continued his strong form with an important performance around the ground.
Campbell Lake provided a spark forward of centre, while captain Jacob Dawson once again worked tirelessly through the midfield.
Noah Casalini and Sam Day each finished with two goals, while Preston Cockatoo-Collins, Brayden Crossley, Campbell Lake, Michael Manteit and Hewago Oea all added singles.
Southport will travel to Tasmania next Saturday 16 May, taking on the Devils in a historic game. The match kicks off at 11:05am at North Hobart Oval.
