SOUTHPORT entered the clash fresh off the bye and looking to build momentum, but Frankston’s ability to capitalise on its opportunities saw the home side record a 21.7 (133) to 12.12 (84) victory.

It was a fast start from the Dolphins, who quickly established scoreboard pressure with seven first-quarter goals. Despite the early onslaught, the Sharks fought back strongly late in the term, reducing the margin and ensuring the contest remained within reach at the first break.

Frankston again looked threatening in the second quarter, but Southport responded impressively under pressure.

Trailing by as much as 41 points during the term, the Sharks produced a strong surge before half time, finishing the quarter with four unanswered goals to cut the deficit to just 10 points at the main break.

Max Pescud was influential during the fightback, kicking two second-quarter goals, while Southport’s small forwards began to generate scoreboard pressure and bring the contest back to even terms.

The second half, however, belonged to Frankston.

The Dolphins regained control after the break, taking advantage of their opportunities going forward and steadily extending their lead throughout the third and fourth quarters.

Despite Southport’s continued effort around the contest, Frankston’s efficiency with ball in hand and ability to convert proved the difference.

Through the midfield, Zac Foot worked tirelessly with 28 disposals, four clearances and a goal, while captain Jacob Dawson battled hard with 26 disposals and 12 clearances.

Ryan Burton made an immediate impact on his return with 24 disposals, while Max Pescud was the standout forward with 20 disposals and three goals.

Sam Day and Sam Lowson each finished with two goals, while Tom Berry, Preston Cockatoo-Collins, Zac Foot, Joshua Gore and Bailey Rawson all contributed majors.

The Sharks will take on Sydney this Saturday at 10:00am at Fankhauser opening up proceedings for a triple header.
