Southport has continued its strong QAFLW campaign, producing a dominant second-half performance to defeat Bond University in Round 8.
The Sharks secured a 14.11 (95) to 4.5 (29) victory, building their advantage throughout the afternoon before breaking the contest open with a blistering final quarter.
Southport made a strong start, controlling territory and creating opportunities in attack to establish an early lead in a tight first term. The Sharks kicked three first-quarter goals to take a 15-point advantage into the first break, but Bond remained within striking distance.
The visitors continued to challenge in the second term, matching Southport’s intensity around the contest and limiting scoreboard damage. Despite the pressure, the Sharks maintained their composure to extend their lead to 20 points by half time.
Following the main break, Southport began to gain greater control of the contest. Their midfield group generated repeat forward entries, and the defensive unit stood firm, restricting Bond to just three goals through the opening three quarters.
After gaining ascendancy off the back of their hard work, Southport piled on six goals to two in a commanding finish, turning what was a competitive contest early into a comprehensive victory.
Vice-captain Steph O’Brien (28 disposals, three clearances, one goal) again led the way through the midfield, while captain Rianna Schipp (21 disposals) was influential around the contest.
Holly Wall (18 disposals, three goals) continued her impressive season with a strong performance, while Maddy Baldwin (14 disposals, three goals) and Tayla Christensen (24 disposals, three goals) also provided a major scoring threat in attack. Lily McDonald was also among the Sharks’ best contributors with another composed display in defence.
The Sharks will continue their season this Saturday at Fankhauser, 1:00pm taking on UQ.

Southport has continued its impressive QAFLW Reserves campaign, overcoming a determined Bond University outfit to secure another victory at Fankhauser Reserve.
The Sharks recorded a 9.5 (59) to 2.3 (15) win, pulling away in the second half after a tightly contested opening two quarters.
Both sides came out with strong intent, making for an entertaining start to the contest. Southport struck first through a pair of opening-quarter goals, but Bond remained within touching distance as the Sharks held a narrow six-point advantage at the first break.
The second term followed a similar pattern, with the visitors continuing to apply pressure and challenge around the contest. While the scoreboard remained relatively close, Southport appeared to have the game on its terms, controlling possession and creating the better opportunities to take a 14-point lead into half time.
After the main break, the Sharks began to separate themselves from their opponents. Their work around stoppages and ability to move the ball into dangerous areas started to yield results, with Southport extending its lead while restricting Bond’s scoring opportunities.
The final quarter saw the Sharks put the result beyond doubt. Four goals in a dominant finish transformed a competitive contest into a convincing victory.
Mia Trinder was the standout in attack with three goals, while Grace Cooper added two majors and was influential throughout the afternoon. Avalon Pearce, Ella Gordon, Abbie Pluples and Keely Whittaker also contributed on the scoreboard in a balanced forward performance.
Georgia Hunt led the way among the Sharks’ best players, while Pearce, Cooper, Nieass, Whittaker and Trinder all played important roles in another complete display.
The Reserves will continue their impressive campaign at Fankhauser Reserve this Saturday 3:00pm, against UQ.
