SOUTHPORT returned to the winner’s list with a commanding 14.14 (98) to 7.7 (49) victory at Fankhauser Reserve, responding emphatically after three consecutive defeats.
The Sharks made the perfect start, taking full advantage of a strong breeze in the opening term.
Sam Day continued his recent trend of opening the scoring, before second-gamer Cooper Hamilton (15 disposals, seven tackles, two goals) produced a stunning maiden goal to help ignite the home side.
Captain Jacob Dawson (31 disposals, nine clearances, two goals) and Zac Foot (20 disposals, one goal) also found the scoreboard early as Southport piled on four first-quarter goals to take a 15-point lead into the first break.
Williamstown responded strongly in the second term, kicking three goals to apply pressure, but the Sharks stood firm.
Despite kicking against the breeze, Southport matched the visitors with three goals of their own to maintain a 15-point advantage heading into half time.
The home side lifted again after the main break, taking complete control of the contest.
Southport’s small forwards came to life, applying relentless pressure and capitalising on their opportunities in the front half, as the Sharks kicked four goals to two in the third quarter to extend their lead.
With the Seagulls searching for a late comeback, Southport delivered its strongest defensive quarter of the afternoon.
The Sharks held Williamstown goalless in the final term, sealing an impressive upset victory and keeping themselves firmly in the finals conversation.
Captain Jacob Dawson once again led from the front, while Finn Hay (13 tackles), Charlie Rowe (14 disposals) and Elijah Reardon (18 disposals, five tackles) all produced influential performances. Sam Day continued his strong form inside 50, while Rhys King (17 disposals, one goal) was also among the Sharks’ best in an outstanding team performance.
The Sharks will continue their season taking on Werribee at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday July 4, 11:05am.
