Last time the Sharks played the Blues, they overcame a 31 point deficit in the third quarter to win by a point.

This time Southport overcame a 27 point deficit in the second quarter, to win 11.17 (83)  to 10.11 (71).

Carlton was able to get to that lead off the back of a five goal to two first quarter and the first goal of the second quarter.

The Sharks began to wrest back momentum midway through the second quarter kicking back to back goals, before the Blues steadied with a goal just before half time.

Carlton led by 18 points at half time and they extended their lead with a goal in the first minute of the third quarter.

It ended up being the home side’s only goal of the quarter, as the Sharks kicked the next four goals to lead by three points at the last change.

The Blues drew first blood in the final term, with two of the first three majors, before Southport kicked two clutch goals late to ensure the Sharks returned to the Gold Coast with the four points.

After the game, Southport Coach Steve Daniel said, “It was another tough win on the road.”

“Carlton jumped us, which was disappointing, but I think it was pleasing how the boys responded and that we were still able to get the job done.”

Jesse Joyce and Max Spencer, in his 50th game for the Sharks, were exceptional down back.

Co-captain Jacob Dawson had another good week in the midfield with 32 disposals, six inside 50s and eleven clearances.

Up forward, Jay Lockhart’s three goals were crucial. Campbell Lake and Zac Foot also played well.

This Saturday, Southport play GWS at Fankhauser Reserve at 11:05am as part of their annual Heritage Round.

The Southport Sharks will play the Gold Coast SUNS on Sunday Afternoon at People First Stadium for the Mackenzie Cup.
