Southport v Coorparoo Round 14 Match Recap

Southport’s QAFLW Seniors went down in a low-scoring thriller against Coorparoo, but the Reserves dominated with a standout 48-point win in slippery Pride Round conditions.

Southport travelled to Brisbane to take on the Coorparoo Kings at Giffin Park on Saturday as part of the second week of Pride Round.

Coorparoo defeated Southport by eight points in wet conditions winning 2.5 (17) to 1.3 (9), inflicting the Sharks with their first loss of the year.
 
The Kings kicked the only goal of the first term to lead by 9 points at quarter time.
 
Neither team could manage to kick a major in the second or third term, with Coorparoo holding an eight-point lead at three quarter time.
 
With it all to play for in the last, Southport scored their first goal of the game early in the final quarter to cut the margin to three points.
 
The Kings responded shortly after with their second major of the game to secure their tenth win of the year.
 
After the match Southport Coach Matthew Lappin said, “It was a tough contest. Full credit to Coorparoo, they executed their gameplan to get the job done.”
 
“We will learn from this and will look to improve by working hard at training and get back to playing the way we play best.”
 
 “It is the first time we have tasted defeat all year, so I am really looking forward to seeing how we respond as a team.”
 
Next week, Southport host Wilston Grange on Saturday 2 August at Fankhauser Reserve at 2:30pm.

Southport defeated Coorparoo by 48 points winning 7.6 (48) to (0) in wet conditions.
 
The Sharks kicked two goals in the first quarter, zero in the second, three in the third and two in the last.
 
Holly Wall and Peyton Mackie were exceptional in the middle, whilst Taneille Krzyska was the general in defence.
 
In attack, Danisha Hart and Mia Trinder led the way with three goals each.
 
After the game Southport Coach Shannan Tate said, “It was a very contested game due to the weather.”
 
“I thought it was a fantastic performance by our girls. To keep Coorparoo scoreless and to kick seven goals in such tough conditions was really pleasing.”
 
“Our girls attack on the footy and tackling pressure was outstanding. I also thought they adapted well to playing a style of footy that suited the conditions.”
 
Next week, Southport host Wilston Grange on Saturday 2 August at Fankhauser Reserve at 4:30pm.

The Southport Sharks took on the Maroochydore Roos in Round 5 of the QAFLW at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday Afternoon.

The Southport Sharks travelled up to North Brisbane on Saturday to take on the Aspley Hornets for ANZAC Round.

The AFL has announced the 2021 VFL season will begin on Saturday, 17 April, with the Grand Final to be held on the weekend starting 18 September.  

Southport’s QAFLW seniors are into the preliminary final after defeating Maroochydore by 41 points in the Elimination Final on Saturday at Yeronga.

It will be a special day for the Davies family at the Shark Showdown today when Southport takes on Bond University in Round 8 of the QAFLW.
