Sharks fall narrowly after late Coorparoo comeback
Southport has suffered a heartbreaking defeat in its Round 5 QAFLW clash, with Coorparoo overturning a three-quarter time deficit to snatch victory late in a top-of-the-table battle.
The Sharks were defeated 6.2 (38) to 3.7 (25) after controlling the contest for much of the afternoon, before a final-quarter surge from the previously undefeated Blues turned the result.
It was a fierce opening to the match, with both sides bringing strong pressure around the ball in a contest that lived up to its billing. Southport settled quickly and created several early opportunities going forward, taking a two-point lead into quarter time despite missed chances in front of goal.
The second term followed a similar pattern, with the Sharks continuing to hold territory and generate scoring opportunities. While Coorparoo struggled to add to its opening-quarter goal, Southport gradually built its advantage to nine points by the main break.
Following half time, the Sharks continued to dictate play and appeared in control of the contest. Their defensive structure held firm, restricting the Blues to just a single goal across the opening three quarters, while repeat entries allowed Southport to extend the margin further heading into the final change.
However, momentum swung dramatically in the last quarter, with Coorparoo capitalising on its opportunities to storm home late. Despite Southport finishing with more scoring shots overall, inaccuracy and a lack of discipline proved costly as the Blues surged to victory.
Ella Maurer continued her strong form with another influential display and a goal, while Kiara Hillier stood tall in defence throughout the contest. Olivia Meagher worked tirelessly across the ground, with captain Rianna Schipp and Steph O’Brien again important around the stoppages. Lily McDonald also impressed with her composure and aerial presence.
Tayla Christensen, Maurer and Caitlin Miller were the Sharks’ only goal kickers in the contest.
Southport will take Aspley at Automall Aspley Oval this Saturday 16 May for a 12:00pm start.

Sharks’ reserves stay unbeaten with commanding win over Coorparoo
Southport has continued its unbeaten start to the 2026 QAFLW Reserves season, producing another polished performance to overcome fellow premiership contender Coorparoo.
The Sharks secured an 8.12 (60) to 1.2 (8) victory, controlling the contest from the opening bounce and strengthening their position at the top of the ladder.
Southport wasted little time taking charge of the game, moving the ball cleanly and applying strong pressure around the contest to open up a five-goal lead at quarter time while keeping Coorparoo scoreless.
The second term became more of a grind, with conditions tightening and scoring opportunities harder to come by. Despite that, the Sharks continued to own field position and limited the Blues to just a solitary behind heading into the main break.
After half time, Southport again lifted its intensity and began to create repeat opportunities going forward. The margin continued to build as the Sharks controlled territory and prevented Coorparoo from generating any sustained momentum.
The visitors remained composed in the final quarter to close out another comprehensive victory, conceding just a single goal for the afternoon in a strong defensive display.
Ruby Mitchell led the way with an influential performance through the midfield, while Lillian Behan and Sage Crossley were also important contributors throughout the contest. Jesica Pang continued her consistent season, with Shelby Harrison and Mia Trinder also among the Sharks’ best performers.
Up forward, Kaylea Kobzan finished with four goals in a standout display, while Crossley added two majors. Ella Gordon and Harrison also hit the scoreboard as part of another balanced team effort.
The Sharks head to Automall Aspley Oval this Saturday 16 May to take on Aspley at 2:00pm.
