Southport are back in the top four of the VFL after a 53 point win over Box Hill on Saturday at Fankhauser Reserve.

The Sharks got off to a great start kicking nine of the first eleven goals to get out to 41 point lead midway through the second term.

The Hawks cut the margin back to 21 points late in the third quarter before Southport stormed home with six goals to one in the last quarter to win 16.11 (107) to 7.12 (54).

After the game, Southport Coach Steve Daniel said, “Our first quarter set up the game for us. We were terrific.”

“The first quarter was something we wanted to get right this week, after kicking the first three goals of the game against the Giants and still losing the first quarter by two goals.”

“Box Hill got on top of us a bit in the third, which we addressed at three quarter time and to the boys credit they responded in the last.”

Defenders – Matt McGuinness, Nick Williams, Ben Jepson and Rhys Clark led the way for the Sharks in the victory.

Daniel said, “Our defence was outstanding. They only had one less Inside 50 than us, yet we still won by nine goals. Incredible!”

This week, Southport travel to Melbourne to take on Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday at 1:05pm.
