Seniors | Sharks withstand early challenge to continue winning streak
Southport has extended its impressive run in the QAFLW Seniors competition, overcoming a fast-starting Aspley to record a hard-earned victory at Fankhauser Reserve.
The Sharks defeated the Hornets 8.6 (54) to 3.3 (21), recovering from an early deficit before taking control through the middle stages of the contest to secure another important four points.
Aspley, entering the match in sixth position, came out with plenty of intent and struck first, controlling much of the early play. The Sharks responded through Caitlin Miller before Giselle Davies ignited the home side, kicking two quick goals to wrestle back momentum and help Southport establish a seven-point lead at quarter time.
The second term belonged to the Sharks as they began to dictate the game around the contest. Their midfield gained the ascendancy, allowing Southport to generate repeat forward entries and gradually extend the margin. It was also a memorable moment for debutant Tara Nieass, who capped off her senior debut with her first goal for the club.
Southport continued to build after the main break, producing another dominant quarter to restrict Aspley’s scoring opportunities while steadily increasing its advantage. The Sharks’ disciplined ball movement and defensive pressure laid the foundation for a 22-point lead at the final change.
The visitors battled until the final siren, but Southport remained composed in the closing stages, stretching the margin further to complete another convincing performance and maintain its strong form.
Steph O’Brien again set the standard through the midfield, while Scarlett Featherstone provided excellent drive around the ground. Kiara Hillier and Megan Hunt anchored another strong defensive performance. Maddy Baldwin and Giselle Davies each finished with two goals.
The Seniors will be back in action against Broadbeach at Fankhauser Reserve this Saturday August 1 at 2:00pm.

Reserves | Sharks continue unbeaten march with complete performance
Southport has maintained its perfect QAFLW Reserves season, defeating Aspley to remain firmly on top of the competition.
The Sharks claimed a 12.7 (79) to 0.5 (5) victory, taking control early before producing another complete four-quarter performance.
Southport made its intentions clear from the opening bounce, opening up a 29-point lead by quarter time. Kaylea Kobzan was the catalyst inside 50, booting all three of her goals in a blistering opening term, while the Sharks restricted Aspley to a solitary behind.
The Sharks continued to build in the second quarter, adding another three goals to extend their lead at the main break. Defender Lily McDonald marked a successful return from injury by hitting the scoreboard with a goal, while the back six again held the Hornets scoreless.
Southport maintained its grip on the contest after half time, adding another three goals in the third term while continuing to deny Aspley any genuine opportunities going forward.
The visitors managed just two behinds in the final quarter, but the result was never in doubt as the Sharks completed another dominant performance.
Neive Ryan was outstanding across the ground, while Lucy Ashcroft, Serina Balanda, Jesica Pang, Georgia Wakefield and Teneille Langdale all made valuable contributions.
Kaylea Kobzan finished with three goals, while Avalon Pearce the only other player with multiples added two.
The Reserves take on Broadbeach at Fankhauser Reserve this Saturday August 1 at 4:00pm.
