The GWS Giants have ended Southport’s seven game winning streak, defeating the Sharks by 27 points at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.

James Peatling (35 disposals) and Aaron Cadman (five goals) led the way for the Giants in the 17.10 (112) to 13.7 (85) victory.

Southport wore their special heritage jumpers, which paid tribute to the 60-year anniversary of the 1964 Southport Magpies GCAFL Premiership, as part of their annual Heritage Round.

The Sharks got off to a great start kicking the first three goals of the match, before GWS responded with six of the next seven goals to lead by 12 points at quarter time.

From there Southport were playing catch up. In the second quarter, the Sharks were able to cut the margin to four points, before the Giants kicked two goals late in the term to lead by 16 points at half time.

The third quarter was very low scoring, with the Giants kicking two goals to Southport’s one.

Trailing by 23 points at three quarter time, the Sharks threw caution to the wind in the last quarter and were able to cut the margin to 14 points.

The Giants were able to steady though, kicking three of the last four goals of the match to win their third game in a row.

After the game, Southport Coach Steve Daniel said, “It was a disappointing result. The Giants were too good for us unfortunately.”

“We have the bye this week, so we will review, recover and reset ahead our last five home and away games.”

Southport’s next game is against Box Hill at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday July 13 at 12:05pm.
