SENIORS

Southport defeated Wilston Grange by 67 points, winning 13.9 (87) to 3.2 (20).

The Sharks got off to a fast start, kicking the first three goals of the game.

Wilston Grange responded with two goals late in the opening term to trail by nine points at quarter time.

In the second quarter, Southport kicked five goals whilst Wilston Grange was kept scoreless.

The Gorillas started the third quarter well, with an early goal before the Sharks responded with back-to-back goals to lead by 41 points at the last change.

Southport kept Wilston Grange scoreless in the last quarter and added a further four goals.

After the game, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “It was another good win. Wilston Grange challenged us, especially in the first and third quarters, but I think we remained calm and were able to play the majority of the game on our terms.”

Young guns Alannah Welsh (5 goals), Dekota Baron (4 goals), and Georja Davies (22 hitouts and nine inside 50s) were impressive in the victory.

Doherty said, “It is very exciting to see our younger players making a mark at state league level.”

This week is a competition bye for the representative game between Queensland and Tasmania on Saturday at Bond University.

Next week, Southport host top of the table Aspley at Fankhauser Rerserve with the game starting at 2pm.

Southport defeated Wilston Grange by 152 points, winning 24.15 (159) to 1.1 (7).

The Sharks scored six goals in the first quarter, seven in the second, six in the third and five in the last term.

Wilston Grange kicked their only goal in the last quarter to minimise the damage slightly.

Sunny Lappin and Kaitlin Mercer led the way in front of goals, with five majors each.

Southport have overtaken Aspley on top of the ladder with the victory because they now have a superior percentage.

After the game, Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “It is nice to have jumped up to the top of the ladder. However, we know there is still a lot of footy to be played.”

“I think the most exciting thing is just how much depth we have on our list and that we have plenty of players ready to play senior football if the opportunity arises.”

Southport have a bye this week. Their next game is against Aspley at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday, 29 June, at 4pm.
