Southport defeated Bond University by 26 points in the eighth edition of the Shark Showdown, winning 8.6 (54) to 4.4 (28).

The Sharks got off to a great start, kicking the first two goals of the game before Bond University steadied with a goal late in the first term.

In the second quarter, Southport extended their lead with another two goals to one term.

Then, early in the third quarter, Megan Hunt kicked a sensational goal to get the Sharks out to a 20 point lead.

Bond University hit back with two goals in a row to only trail by eight points at three quarter time.

In the final term, Southport were determined not to let the opportunity of defeating their rivals for their first time at Fankhauser Reserve slip.

The Sharks finished the game off strongly kicking three goals to zero in the last quarter to win their fifth game in a row.

After the game, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “I’m so proud of the girls that we were able to get the job done this afternoon against a quality outfit.”

“I think this afternoon’s performance gives us the belief that our best football is good enough to beat anyone.”

“Don’t get me wrong, we are on a journey and still have a long way to go, but today’s game was a step in the right direction.”

Southport remain second on the ladder, with six wins and two losses.

This Saturday, Southport play Wilston Grange at Hickey Park at 2pm.

Southport defeated Bond University by 8 points, winning 5.4 (34) to 4.2 (26).

The Bull Sharks led by three points at half time, despite having two less scoring shots than the Sharks.

Bond University extended their lead to nine points at three quarter time after kicking two goals to one in the third term.

Southport didn’t give up, though, and kicked four goals to one in the last quarter to win their sixth game in a row.

After the game, Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “It was an amazing win. I’m so proud of the resilience our girls showed to come back and win the way they did.”

“We haven’t beaten Bond for a while, so today’s game gives us the confidence that we can do it if we work hard as a team.”

The Sharks remain in second on the ladder with seven wins and a loss.

This Saturday, Southport play Wilston Grange at Hickey Park at 12:00pm.
