QAFLW ROUND 3 MATCH REPORTS – SOUTHPORT V ASPLEY

Southport remain undefeated in the QAFLW Seniors with a 31 point win over Aspley, who were undefeated going into the game.

SENIORS

Southport remain undefeated in the QAFLW Seniors with a 31 point win over Aspley, who were undefeated going into the game.

The Sharks got off to a great start kicking four goals to zero in the opening term, which set up the win 6.8 (44) to 2.1 (13) win.

Maggie O’Connell, who mostly played Reserves last year, continued her great form with four goals and now leads the competition this year for most goals kicked.

Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “Maggie has had a terrific start to the year. We have always loved her energy, and it is great to see her hard work paying off.”

Ruby Mitchell (1 goal) also played well up forward and provided a lot of forward pressure.

In the midfield, Steph O’Brien led the way with her clearance work, and down back, Selina Priest played her best game of the year.

Doherty said, “Aspley is a quality outfit, so to play the way that we did was really pleasing.”

“We have had a great start to the year, but there is still room for improvement, and we look forward to playing Bond University this week in a top of the table clash.”

The Senior’s game against Bond University will be played at Bond University on Saturday May 6 at 4:45pm.

RESERVES

Southport has suffered their first defeat in the QAFLW Reserves this year, losing to the Aspley Hornets by 30 points on Saturday at Fankhauser Reserve.

The undefeated Hornets were too good for the Sharks, winning 6.7 (43) to 2.2 (14).

Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “It was a tough game, but I actually thought despite the result, the girls battled really hard and gave it everything, especially in the second half.”

“We were a bit undermanned this week, which sometimes happens in Reserves football and is out of our control, but I thought our effort and work rate were great.”

Maddie Gault in the midfield and Maddy Baldwin who played at both ends of the ground on Saturday, were the shining lights in the side’s loss and put their hand up for senior selection.

This week Southport play Bond University in a Grand Final rematch at Bond University on Saturday Night at 6:45pm.
