The Southport Sharks drew with Port Melbourne 10.12 (72) to 10.12 (72) in windy conditions at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday.
Port Melbourne dominated in the first half leading by 30 points at the main break.
Southport cut the margin quickly in the third quarter, kicking two early goals.
The Borough steadied with two of the next three majors, before the Sharks kicked two goals late in the term to only trail by ten points at three quarter time.
As has been a theme for the Sharks this year, the game came down to the wire.
Port kicked the first major of the final term inside the first two minutes.
Then, Southport forward Hugh Dixon kicked two clutch goals to reduce the margin to two points, with half a quarter still to be played.
Both teams had opportunities to score goals late in the game, but neither team could.
The Sharks managed to kick three of the next four minor scores to ensure the game was a draw.
After the game Southport Coach Matt Primus said, “We showed great courage to come back and get the game back on our terms, after a poor first half.”
“Unfortunately though, we didn’t take our opportunities with shots on goal in the last ten minutes to win the game, but you would rather get two points than no points.”
“We will dust ourselves off and review, then go again next week. Our aim now is to focus on our team synergy to see if we can get it back to how it was in the first few weeks of the season.”
Southport travel to Melbourne next week to play Casey at Casey Fields on Saturday 17 May at 11:05am.
