SOUTHPORT has gone down to Richmond by 40 points, with missed opportunities proving costly across the afternoon in the 14.16 (100) to 7.18 (60) result.

Through the middle, co-captain Jacob Dawson and vice-captain Zac Foot stood up throughout the contest. Dawson finishing with a game high 37 disposals along with nine clearances, while Foot conjured up 30 disposals with nine marks.
Max Pescud finished with two goals and 18 disposals in attack, while Campbell Lake and Sam Lowson provided support at ground level with a goal apiece.
In the back half, veteran Jesse Joyce (29 disposals) was crucial in defence, setting the tone and standing strong under pressure over the course of the game.
It was a hot start to the round one clash, with the Sharks quickly establishing early dominance through the midfield.
Jacob Dawson and Zac Foot led from the front, helping Southport generate repeat forward entries and control territory in the opening term.
After an early opportunity went begging, the Tigers drew first blood at Frankston – however, it didn’t take long for the Sharks to respond.
Sam Day made an immediate impact in his first game in black and white, kicking the opening goal after a strong contested mark.
Despite having midfield ascendancy, the scoreboard failed to reflect the Sharks’ control. While Southport created multiple scoring chances, they were unable to fully capitalise and left the Tigers holding a narrow margin at the first change.
The second quarter saw a shift in momentum, with Richmond beginning to flex their muscles and find rhythm.
While the Sharks continued to work hard around the contest, inefficiency going forward began to mount, as a series of missed opportunities allowed the Tigers to take control heading into half time.
Looking to respond after the main break, Foot got the Sharks off to a fast start with the first clearance of the half, only to be denied by the woodwork.
Southport continued to show fight throughout the third term, with Max Pescud providing a spark up forward alongside. However, Richmond’s ability to convert continued to prove the difference.
Despite the Sharks’ continued effort, Richmond maintained control in the final term, extending the margin to 40 points and ensuring the visitors couldn’t close the gap.
The Sharks will be back in action next Saturday 28 March, taking on the Brisbane Lions at Brighton Homes Arena at 11:05 am AEST.
