Southport travelled to the Sunshine Coast on Saturday to take on the Maroochydore Roos at Neil Upton Oval on Saturday in Round 13 of the QAFLW.

Seniors

In the Seniors, the Sharks defeated the Roos by 35 points in Maddy Watt and Hannah Davies’ 50th games for the senior club.

Maddy Watt was the Sharks’ best on ground in the midfield and Hannah Davies kicked the Sharks first goal of the game in the 7.8 (50) to 2.3 (15) victory.

Maroochydore kicked the first goal of the game, but Hannah Davies’ goal a couple of minutes later kick started the Sharks.

It was an even first quarter but a soccer goal seconds before the siren gave the visitors a six point buffer at quarter time.

Maroochydore, like the first quarter,  got a lot of inside 50s early in the second quarter, however, were only able to manage a point.

Halfway through the second quarter, the Sharks went down the other end and scored through Jess Malouf.

In the second half Southport were dominant kicking four goals to one.

After the match, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “It is always a danger game heading up to the Sunshine Coast to take on Maroochydore, but I thought the girls handled it well.”

Steph O’Brien (32 disposals) played well in the middle, Tayla Gregory (2 goals) was a great target forward and Leigh Alder was solid down back.

This week, the Seniors play Wilston Grange for Pride Round at Giffin Park (Coorparoo) on Saturday at 10am.

Reserves

In the Reserves, the Southport Sharks defeated the Maroochydore Roos by seven points.

The last time these sides met (Round 5), the Roos won, but this time it was the Sharks who were too good, winning 3.2 (20) to 17 (13).

The first quarter was even but the Sharks got on top in the second quarter to lead by 10 points at the main break.

Maroochydore had plenty of opportunities in the third quarter to take the lead, but the Sharks defence stood firm, and in the last quarter neither team could score a goal.

After the game, Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “I’m really proud of the girls efforts. They took the most of their opportunities, and fought hard all day, which is all you can ask as a coach.”

The win means that the Sharks’ Reserves, despite being fifth on the ladder, are still in touch with the top four with three games to go.

Their next game is against Wilston Grange on Saturday 15th July at 12pm for Pride Round.
