Fraser Thurlow’s six goals were not enough for the Southport Sharks, who went down to Brisbane Lions at Brighton Homes Arena by 19 points in Round 4 of the VFL.
The Sharks had some good periods in the game but also some extremely poor ones in the 14.13 (97) to 18.8 (116) loss.
Thurlow’s six-goal performance was the shining light in the loss, and he now leads the Frosty Miller Medal (VFL Leading Goalkicker) with 13 goals.
Southport didn’t have great preparation going into the match, losing Mackenzie Willis who did his ACL at training during the week.
After the game, Southport Coach Steve Daniel said, “I was reasonably happy with our performance on the weekend under the circumstances except for our second quarter.”
“We dropped our heads in the second quarter and found ourselves six goals down at half time. You can’t drop off at this level because teams will punish you.”
Southport won the second half by 15 points, which gives the side confidence despite being 1-3 after four rounds.
Daniel said, “We are in unfamiliar territory. It is frustrating that we keep falling short, but it will be good to see how we react to being in this situation.”
“This week our aim is to put in a full four quarter performance and win against the Bulldogs down there.”
Southport play the Footscray Bulldogs on Saturday 22 April 12:05 pm at Port Melbourne’s home ground, ETU Stadium, as the Whitten Oval is currently undergoing renovations.
