Despite the loss, defenders Jo-Anna Baltais, Kaylee Kimber, and Shayla Lloyd played well.

Midfielders Steph O’Brien (25 disposals, seven tackles and a goal) and Maddy Watt (17 disposals and eight tackles) were busy whilst up forward, Tayla Gregory was a good target (four marks and a goal).

After the match, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “We knew it was going to be a tough challenge going up against last year’s grand finalists on their home deck, and it was.”

“We will learn a lot from that game as there were periods of that game where I thought we were in control and then other moments where we were outplayed.”

“We are only three games into this season, and we have already played the two grand finalists from last year, so we have to keep our heads up and go again this week.”

This Saturday, Southport play the University of Queensland at Fankhauser Reserve at 3:00pm.
