SOUTHPORT entered the clash knowing a win was crucial following last week’s draw with Sandringham, and despite surrendering a third-quarter lead, the Sharks responded when it mattered most to secure an important four points.
The home side made the perfect start, with Noah Casalini (17 disposals, five marks) kicking the opening goal of the afternoon before Max Pescud (18 disposals, three goals) converted after the quarter-time siren to hand Southport an early eight-point advantage.
The second quarter developed into a tight arm wrestle, with both sides trading goals throughout. While the Sharks generated seven scoring shots to Frankston’s five, inaccuracy in front of goal prevented them from opening a bigger buffer, taking a five-point lead into the main break. Swingman Matt McGuinness (nine disposals, two goals) also celebrated his first goal in Southport colours, providing an important contribution before half time.
The momentum swung after half time as the Dolphins came out firing, piling on five goals for the quarter to briefly take control of the contest.
With Frankston threatening to break the game open, vice-captain Zac Foot (34 disposals, six clearances, three goals) stood tall. The midfielder produced a brilliant quarter, kicking three goals to keep the Sharks within striking distance and ensure the deficit remained just three points heading into the final change.
Southport responded when it counted in the last.
Finn Hay (16 disposals, four tackles, one goal) wasted little time getting the Sharks underway before McGuinness popped up again with his second goal of the afternoon at a crucial moment, helping Southport regain the lead.
Frankston refused to go away and reduced the margin late, but the Sharks stood firm in the closing minutes to complete a hard-fought victory.
Jacob Dawson (31 disposals, 16 clearances) and Zac Foot once again led from the front through the midfield, while Finn Hay played a crucial lock down role. Max Pescud and Matt McGuinness hit the scoreboard throughout.
In defence, Max Spencer was colossal with 21 marks and 28 disposals, with Cooper MacDonald (24 disposals, 13 marks) and Elijah Reardon (21 disposals, seven marks) calm alongside him as Southport held on to keep its season alive.
The Sharks take on GWS Giants next Saturday August 1 at 11:05am, at Fankhauser Reserve.
