Seniors

Southport defeated Aspley by 27 points, winning 8.5 (53) to 3.8 (26).

The Sharks got off to a great start, scoring four goals in the first ten minutes of the match which put the previously undefeated Hornets on the back foot.

Aspley steadied late in the first quarter and kicked the first goal of the second quarter to remain in the contest.

Just as the Hornets were getting back into the game, the Sharks responded with back-to-back goals to lead by 31 points at halftime.

Southport extended their lead early in the third quarter to 37 points before the Hornets kicked two goals in a row just before three quarter time.

In the last quarter, the Sharks kicked the only goal to win their seventh game in a row.

Kierra Zerafa (27 disposals), Emma Suckling (16 disposals), Maddy Watt (six tackles), and Georja Davies (30 hitouts) led the way for the Sharks.

After the game, Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “I’m really proud of the girls. It was a great win against a team who was undefeated coming into the game.”

“It gives us great belief that our best is good enough to beat anyone in the competition. The challenge is now about being able to do it in finals.”

This week, Southport play the University of Queensland at UQ Playing Field 2 at 3:45pm on Saturday.

Reserves

Southport defeated Aspley by 46 points, winning 10.8 (68) to 3.4 (22).

The Sharks were inaccurate in the first quarter but they still led by nine points at quarter time.

Southport capitalised on their opportunities in the second quarter and led by 22 points at half time.

In the second half, Southport kicked six more goals to Aspley’s two to win their eighth game in a row.

Neesa Doyle (four goals) and Alicia Gordon (three goals) led the way in front of goals for the Sharks.

Jess Maher, Aasha Elliott and Ebony Milne were also impressed in the victory.

The Sharks are now four points clear on top of the ladder, with four home and away games to go.

Southport Coach Mal Smith said, “It was nice to have a big win over a quality outfit like Aspley.”

“It is important though, that we keep working hard and improving as a group as we head into the final month of the home and away season.”
