Bond University defeated the Southport Sharks in both grades on Saturday Evening at Bond University.

Seniors

In the Seniors, Bond University won by 21 points and came home strongly to win 6.8 (44) to 3.5 (23).

Bond University kicked the first goal of the game, but the Sharks responded with two soccer goals in a row to lead by nine points at quarter time.

The Sharks’ nine point lead remained at half time, with both sides kicking a goal in the second term.

Bond University reduced that margin within the first thirty seconds of the third quarter and then hit the front a few minutes later.

Southport didn’t kick a goal in the third term, and they found themselves trailing at the last change by four points.

With it all to play for in the last quarter, Bond University came out and kicked two quick goals to win the game.

After the game Southport Coach Peter Doherty said, “We are obviously disappointed not to get the four points, but I think there was a lot to take away from the game.”

“They are last year’s premiers for a reason. They are a quality outfit, and I thought we controlled the match for periods of the game especially in the first half, which was pleasing.”

“Where I think we let ourselves down was our efficiency Inside 50, and we conceded a lot of goals from centre clearances which hurt.”

“We have a bye this week so we will review, recover and reset ahead a big game against Aspley in a couple of weeks.”
